Honeywell Exits Laser Eyewear Business

Honeywell has announced that they will no longer be in the business of manufacturing laser safety eyewear.

Effective as of April 21st, 2019, the Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment (The "PPE Regulation") definitively replaced the existing Council Directive 89/686/EEC (The "PPE Directive"). Consequently all personal protective equipment ("PPE") placed on the market after April 21st, 2019 has to be compliant with this regulation.

Because of this change, Honeywell's EMEA business section made the decision to rationalize the laser eyewear product range in order to concentrate their efforts on core lines of business. This would cause a significant impact to Americas' production and material supply chain, compelling Honeywell's exit in the Americas as well.

More information about Honeywell's exit can be found here:

Honeywell Laser Eyewear Exit FAQS

RLI will continue to sell certain models of Honeywell eyewear until stock is depleted. In addition to these models, however, RLI has made arrangements to offer a complete line of laser safety eyewear from an alternate source. This eyewear is compliant with all safety regulations, both in the United States and abroad.

FDA Issues Laser Notices 56 and 57

IEC MeetingOn May 8, 2019, the FDA issued two Laser Notices, Laser Notice 56 and 57. These laser product policy guides address the agency's partial acceptance of the 2014 Edition 3 of IEC 60825-1 general safety standard for laser products (with its interpretation sheets) and of the 2012 Edition 3.1 of IEC 60601-2-22 safety standard for medical laser products.

Laser notice 56 is more general and lists parts of the IEC standard the agency considers comparable as alternatives to its own requirements, and parts of the FDA regulations that the agency believes are not comparable and remain binding on manufacturers and importers.

Laser Notice 57 addresses laser illuminated projectors and is more burdensome upon manufacturers and importers of these products than simple acceptance of Edition 3 of IEC 60825-1: 2014 would have been.
